So it took me all of 4 separate days totaling maybe 6 hours to write 4 posts on a project that took darn near 365 days........wow. Here we are, the finish line and boy are we thankful, relieved, elated.....all emotions that describe just happy to be done. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Needless to say my construction knowledge is a bit more plentiful albeit when you start at pure ignorance there's only one way to go....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We just want to thank everyone who helped us both great and small, family, friends, strangers, 2nd shift Lowes employees who listened sincerely while a guy who has no words to explain what material(s) he needs use words to describe that thingy or the "ya know that part that goes here or there" Thank you to Jeff, Dad Dill, Matt, Brent, and Dad Zeller for your patience, time, and most importantly your love in helping us get this to completion. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also want to give thanks and credit to one of my best friends Joel Cox from JC Photographic for taking the pictures of the finished product for me. He is a great photographer and even better friend of 15 years. Thank you so much Joel.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you've waited for, here is the final project from fully finished stairwell to the hidden rough yet functional areas of the utility room and storage.</div>

Full disclosure here I took pics before Kim had time to "accent" the wall above the sofa. There are greens hanging there now so sorry babe for not having them on here. </div>

For the curious minds about where we bought this from:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Coffee Table/ Trunk - This was an heirloom from my Grandma Zeller that was made out of cedar. Kim aged that as well. Her and I differed on this as I would have rather seen the natural wood but hey in the end it looks great. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Couch - We got a steal. We went to Ashley furniture one night to look at couches and found one we liked. Price $599. Kim just happened to go down to UFS albeit with her Walther PPK in tow and check out their furniture. She found the EXACT SAME couch for $399. Ummmm yes please. I've already assessed that it's a great napping couch and parentally peaceful down there. :) </div>

Now for our custom pieces. Remember that desk I wanted that I told you about, well the end result is the custom piece Brent made for us. 55" X 36" X 30" I wanted something deep with plenty of workspace unlike our old desk. This fit the bill. These original corncrib 2 X 12s were sanded to perfection. I left the finish raw without any sealing done so the wood could age naturally. This may change over time but I loved the craftsmanship that Brent turned out here as it was exactly what I was hoping for. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So this was mom Dills idea to have the sliding door in front of our washer dryer. This would allow us to increase the footprint of the basement and not sacrifice space by keeping the door linear. I love how it turned out even though it sounds like thunder upstairs when someone is opening it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Dad dill whipped this custom door out for us from some old barn ship lap and some custom iron work that he fabricated.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So this is a shot of our utility door and how we finished both with frosting the glass and using lettering from a company called "Simply Said". Kim found a great steal for knobs through Etsy which made the whole door come together. We loved how these turned out but again the work to get there was the hardest out of anything in the project. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm really glad we went with a more detailed trim on the door. It really softened the linear lines of the basement with adding just a touch of character to the doors. I feel like our basement feels bigger because of all the entry's we have now. The Utility room, the sliding door for the laundry, the Storage room, and the Theatre room.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a peak into the utility room. One way we minimized the clutter around the desk area was to have our dedicated files and printer back in here since it's wireless. Really helped with the clutter. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfm-xijW_suaJKt_yKinbAkxLCc1dVKQuaGIStyPTVfiGULnLoPBD4s_IVf49wna_ZEov_nyK_A7GJcYevmOVMKfpYlgA3d5fGR_JzTUhIXOgv0_c5vRnweot0BmchTOyT7zlFaUkUirxQ/s1600/IMG_018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfm-xijW_suaJKt_yKinbAkxLCc1dVKQuaGIStyPTVfiGULnLoPBD4s_IVf49wna_ZEov_nyK_A7GJcYevmOVMKfpYlgA3d5fGR_JzTUhIXOgv0_c5vRnweot0BmchTOyT7zlFaUkUirxQ/s640/IMG_018.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lastly the storage room. I think this was most exciting to get this room organized and better finished than what it was before. It's that room where you can go in and just kind of exhale when you feel so cramped by all of the kids stuff that is around. The pictures don't do justice to how we configured this for more storage but I thought I'd include them anyways since this was part of the big reno. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Use the pole as your refernce. Again here's what we did. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Removed the drop ceiling and recovered with plaster board</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Removed the table in the center</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Removed the storage rack on the right</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Repurposed the fluorescents from the main basement area</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Added uber shelving for storage.</div>

So there you have it. A years worth of work, sweat, blood, tears, stress, and the adjectives could go on and on but we are thankful. There are a lot of things going on in this world and I believe Kim would agree with me when I say that this basement taught us a lot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It taught Kim that things just don't get done as quickly when you're married to a talentless salesman. It taught us that many problems are first world and need be put in their place. In the time of preparation to finish this it reminds me that HE has gone to prepare a place for us. For Kim, for me, for Rowen and Hudson, and for you. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thank you to each of you for always asking me how the project was going, even in the end when it turned more to jeers (totally understandable). We appreciate each of you and love you all. Until the next project...</div>

Brief Warning....this will be the longest blog post of the 4. I apologize in advance for the Type A personality and detail listed. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If this were a marathon this would be about miles 16-20. Albeit I've never run a marathon in my life but if I did I'm guessing this would be an accurate description. Runners, any input? Ok so we are at the finishing stage.....sorta.....again with the construction knowledge. I never realized how quickly you get to the finishing stage and then the questions and details come in (insert wide eyed yellow faced emoji here).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We left off with Matt and me rocking out the ship lap downstairs. Here we go with the finished product for that great room. The ship lap is primed and not painted which is giving it that white washed look. We actually thought at one point it looked cool enough to leave as-is but then later changed our mind and painted it white anyways. Apparently changing your mind in the finishing stages is common place.....pretty sure we took a couple years off Uncle Jeff's life. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This saw was a modified saw for outdoor siding use that Dad dill lent me. This thing was perfect especially for some of the length of pieces we had. For those wondering when we ordered the ship lap it came in 3 lengths. 12' 14' and 16' which was a real treat brining downstairs. There was a lot of jockeying getting those boys down here.....buuuuut we did. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Remember that laser.....It's like OCD staring right back at me with a red eye.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTzGfmyNcwDIol0G5f9_nREYhiAFxOtflIfoWsZi7GT4YvTJCeNAIC3Kv27NfPtoLe1pfYLqFxqzWv8ZjO1vvLyYLQw0cEj2o_htRPuJmk4tYOWGYiDOmRwVnwuiXRoZdaABUSY6JyyZPd/s1600/IMG_4223.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTzGfmyNcwDIol0G5f9_nREYhiAFxOtflIfoWsZi7GT4YvTJCeNAIC3Kv27NfPtoLe1pfYLqFxqzWv8ZjO1vvLyYLQw0cEj2o_htRPuJmk4tYOWGYiDOmRwVnwuiXRoZdaABUSY6JyyZPd/s640/IMG_4223.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
From there we did decided to move the ship lap all the way up our stair well and finish off the ceiling with it as well. That was a little tricky but Uncle Jeff getting it started at the base and making the transition from the block wall to the drywall made it much easier to finish off. The plan was to move the light to the center of the ceiling rather than right over the door like it is now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGdZi2WyzsQk5PN3GEX9oa3IcLiwXx33y_QDio7LxZ84DN8n6RPeP7LS_DGxfWrDds7FBqy7bk2ULt-AnOALYoAPhW18fb6GhIo4r71B5xdgVZov2CqUGoH4QsiSl0er6vzZPlGjnRdxQ5/s1600/IMG_4482.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGdZi2WyzsQk5PN3GEX9oa3IcLiwXx33y_QDio7LxZ84DN8n6RPeP7LS_DGxfWrDds7FBqy7bk2ULt-AnOALYoAPhW18fb6GhIo4r71B5xdgVZov2CqUGoH4QsiSl0er6vzZPlGjnRdxQ5/s640/IMG_4482.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thankfully Dad Dill had a few free days to help me finish it off up the sides and the ceiling. He fashioned a very "wide" scaffold of which Kim absolutely loved standing on those as well as those step stools to do the ceiling. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Again not sure if it needs said but....there's that laser again. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We looked at what seemed like forever at so many different options for what we wanted in this stairwell. I knew from the get go that I wanted a chandelier. I had in my head what I wanted but couldn't quite find it. We looked on Wayfair, through catalogs at the flower shop, at the gift show when Kim went and on and on. We finally settled on one that she found at the gift show which went for around $200. Quite honestly I wasn't 100% in love with but it was more of a we need something now so let's just get it.......those are always terrible decisions it seems like. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When she got home the company said they were no longer producing/selling that light fixture so we were back at square one. On to wayfair we went and again found a light that I was half in love with but it fit the bill of two things chandelier and produced light so just about when we were ready to drop $280 on the plastic she thought she would do a little varagesaling (sp?). I have never been more in love with an app such as this. Side plug here it has saved us tons of money on clothes, furniture etc. Just don't bid against us on it. :)</div>
<br />
We found this gem below for $40...yeah $40 not even kidding. It was perfect. I wanted something a bit ornate but metal to give it some masculinity to it. It was very similar to our church chandeliers I liked which unfortunately our stately ranch is a tad small to fit those big chandeliers in a stairwell. :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We went and picked this up and over to Menards where I bought some new wiring and chain and rewired this bad boy. We were all in for around $75 on this guy and it's probably my favorite or second favorite part of the reno. </div>

The next three pictures are just some snaps of inspiration on what we wanted the look and feel of basement to be. It's not going to have natural light but we wanted it cozy. You'll see the ship lap in pic one, the door trimming in pic two and then a similar layout to our closets in pic 3.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also at this point in the process this is where I brought in my brother in law Brent. Remember that pet project I mentioned??? Well that was a desk. I finally found one I wanted but unless I wanted to fork over about $3,000 on firstdibs.com for a 1800s french one I wasn't gonna have it. Enter Brent. He had spent the past year tearing down some excellent beams and ship lap as well as 2 x 12s......legit 2 x 12s out of the families' old Corncrib on the farm. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Many of you may have seen him post some of his projects he's done like finishing his own basement, children's tables, side tables, etc. I thought hey, what can it hurt to ask him if he would like a shot at doing this. Below is the picture of the desk I wanted. Nothing complicated but I wanted a nice deep desk for work for Kim, or even when I'm working on a home project/Sunday School lessons. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the wood after he spent some time planing it down. This wood was nothing short of GORGEOUS. I don't even know if as a male I can describe a finished woodworking product as such but that's the only word I can think of. This natural wood was excellent. In the end I didn't have him varnish/stain/seal it or anything. The natural wear was absolutely perfect. Wait till you see how it turned out. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can see how the cabinet/bed space is beginning to come together. The recessed area will be for the bed as you'll see later and the bench has two piano hinged doors to open and store toys underneath. This is great for the boys. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Right before Jeff moved back in our basement he dropped off the wood out at my dads house where he has a giant vacuumed paint booth to get the finish as Eddie would say....Reeeeaaal Nice. :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This would also be the part I remind you that It was July, high 90s, 70%+ humidity. These pictures showed about 1/3 of what my dad ended up priming and painting. Uncle Jeff standing with the closets here gives you an idea as to their height and storage capacity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So let me say this. As we finished unloading my dad basically had the physical/mental decision to:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A) Have a heart attack</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
B) Have a stroke</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
C) Go Cain and Abel on me</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
D) Move out of the state</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
E) Remove me from the will</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well he's in too good of shape to have either "A" or B happen......thank you Grandma Zeller. As a professing believer in Christ praise the Lord "C" wasn't even an option. Mom would never in a million years let him take her from her grand-babies so bye bye "D".......which leaves us with "E". I only have to work until....I die....but hey, I have expertly primed and painted trim and closets that will store my kids toys and such for as long as they're under my roof! Yeah that was worth it.....I think. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ok So this phase has it's own chapter I feel like. Below is an inspiration pic for the doors to the storage and utility rooms. Circa the old days in school where the doors had the letters painted on them. Simple right, find an old door, restore it and label the glass. Easy.....not even close. These doors basically put Kim in one corner and me in the other in UFC #210 and let's just say I'm the untrained guy wanting to crawl out of the cage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll save you the pure boredom but let me sum these doors up in a couple words. Old doors + unknown lead paint + power sanding (outside thankfully) + kids around = lead scare/paranoia.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Got that???? So yeah we in essence had to use paint stripper which is pretty much more toxic than the lead paint to remove the paint outside, then a process of wet sanding it where Kim was really ready to kill my type A OCD after we visqueened off the area and wore.....well......you'll see.</div>

Yeah so when you see those HGTV shows where they say they restored an old door.......this is it right here. Looking back the $500 we saved was probably not even worth the time and effort.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here is the final touch up stages of paint and trimming out before the carpet and furniture arrived. I actually discovered in this stage that while I absolutely abhor painting I found caulking to be extremely relaxing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can get an idea of the color scheme here and that we ended up painting that beam black. It really pops and we are glad we did it. </div>

Like everything, it started with a vision....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So where were we.....ah yes basement stripped and prepped and ready for talented uncle Jeff to get started. So essentially here's what we wanted to do. The basement is long and skinny and has along I-Beam running down the middle. It's great for support (needed actually, there goes my construction genius again), but terrible for function. The two supports for the beam are write in the middle of the room and basically limit what you're able to do and/or stick around them. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Enter my sketch/plan of what we wanted to do. Basically we wanted to maximize storage for the boys toys while maintaining a flexibility for later should the space's needs change. Also with only having the two boys bedrooms and the theatre room downstairs not being functional for guests we wanted to include a murphy bed so they would have their own personal space. By nature most murphy beds fold down vertically however because of the beam and placement of the bed we had to go the horizontal route. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Skx0WX3nxKSliKGPdjrlt5j4DFCCUH61GWQWd74smFXltrj8FGsClCOCcmOevrYLbHWFmP2UkntTVf_MJoJEEVYfWdd_fYIRC-6NvAM1VDW3zh0hWBHuSWLY5Qotdm8SqZ50MYDn-q95/s1600/IMG_3779.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Skx0WX3nxKSliKGPdjrlt5j4DFCCUH61GWQWd74smFXltrj8FGsClCOCcmOevrYLbHWFmP2UkntTVf_MJoJEEVYfWdd_fYIRC-6NvAM1VDW3zh0hWBHuSWLY5Qotdm8SqZ50MYDn-q95/s640/IMG_3779.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Before picture for reference:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8smPjOkqtgxMcZxo-qJppFzinej6aD3WrtGqXhzgCM5YO1C_eLYIrYM_2Y0aJp9kQGUusSS8qCNICeh2LoGDZ7ZaHmQY_nzGTQE5WxV8bKF7iW8qjcrZLtXj2mSOGCPbMz6YgshSJVtfp/s1600/IMG_2315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8smPjOkqtgxMcZxo-qJppFzinej6aD3WrtGqXhzgCM5YO1C_eLYIrYM_2Y0aJp9kQGUusSS8qCNICeh2LoGDZ7ZaHmQY_nzGTQE5WxV8bKF7iW8qjcrZLtXj2mSOGCPbMz6YgshSJVtfp/s640/IMG_2315.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Again harkening back to my construction knowledge we discussed that beam.....forever!!! Without the guidance of Kim or my mother in law, but with Matt watching my boys upstairs.....my father in law and I literally stared at that beam for almost two hours trying to figure out what to do with it. From wrapping it in wood, to plaster, to adding a faux beam on the other side to make it balance, the decision came down to.....paint it black to match the other part in the theatre room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Remember Matt, my right hand, leg, brain, etc.....yes the man can literally put up drywall with his feet all the while entertaining two little ankle biters who worship the ground he walks on.....carpeted or not. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_fP73mLgTA4QVE34llhjUEhl3SHr0EkIZ9RXu3-K23lw94gt9EpoRpoy0wF9-GsQdMCFPIAyuVa6JWyZlqPBrR5mWJz_E9pEjoYwEeHIJ97g_FErk3u_WQRGKAOlkRIn4g6yMCJZRk55a/s1600/IMG_3713.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_fP73mLgTA4QVE34llhjUEhl3SHr0EkIZ9RXu3-K23lw94gt9EpoRpoy0wF9-GsQdMCFPIAyuVa6JWyZlqPBrR5mWJz_E9pEjoYwEeHIJ97g_FErk3u_WQRGKAOlkRIn4g6yMCJZRk55a/s640/IMG_3713.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here it is all stripped down ready to go. With a snap of a finger and an on your mark set.... Jeff was off!!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So here you can really start to tell where the closets/bench/bed take shape. I never realized how much calculations go in to something like this. In school math was always my forte and came easy to me, but it was more book smart. Jeff and dad dill could walk circles around me putting what I learned in school to practical application of which I just gave the blankest, my brain isn't functioning, stair you've ever seen. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6yP13qY9gJBKBxD_wpff_8rKY3m8HzFfl7CvW8J8uPgbVhuUl-81naAbHJECaDcCVCsd8Ns9tSunsx87At7nhHNRc9baYWbb6PiCDIOFG2k4kw4OP86l4zFrCU5J3wgTuEUKyic2U5VLS/s1600/IMG_3807.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6yP13qY9gJBKBxD_wpff_8rKY3m8HzFfl7CvW8J8uPgbVhuUl-81naAbHJECaDcCVCsd8Ns9tSunsx87At7nhHNRc9baYWbb6PiCDIOFG2k4kw4OP86l4zFrCU5J3wgTuEUKyic2U5VLS/s640/IMG_3807.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In keeping with what I mentioned about storage you can see below the bench was more storage in addition to the closets. This is great for the boys to have toys they can still get to without having to file request forms to said parents to get things off the top shelf. I've found it's a great way to earn their allowance money back....twisted I know. </div>

As quickly as you scrolled through those pics is as quick as Jeff got it framed in. So here's the skeleton. From this point on is was up to us to get it ready for the finish out. </div>

One thing I was happy about was cleaning up our desk area. The desk is going to the right of that sliding barn door and I wanted to have little to know wires there if possible. You'll notice in the pic below the rats nest of modem, cable, ethernet, extension cord and on and on. That will go behind the wall of the sliding barn door almost beneath the stairs. It was a great way to hide the wires but still make them easily accessible for IT support to get ahold of (read: me)</div>

So now the fun begins. Fortunately I have other guys way more talented than me at roughing an area out. ANJ Electric (relation that depending on the day may claim me or may not...jk) Helped get my lighting up and running. We went with 5" can's because I wanted a different look and 6" seemed to big and 4" .....well bigger is better right??? The insulation crew was awesome to work with as well!!! My friends from CII (Central Illinois Insulation) did the work for me. They did Bat(sp?) on the walls and spray foam around my baseplate to mitigate the cooler winter temps. Tim Wagenbach owns and operates CII and is very easy to work with. I'm biased because he's a good friend of mine but I also know his work ethic and customer service are second to none. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also in this pic below you'll notice the beginnings of the creeping stage. That's the ship lap...unloaded from the truck.....reloaded through the back window of the house. I bet I did 60 flights of stairs bringing that stuff down. Needless to say I'm glad it's done but this was a pain to have to shift this stuff all over the place. Again construction negligence on my part for not waiting to order it until later......or was it the fact that my wife generously reminded me quite frequently of her fear that we wouldn't get it quick enough. Husbands and wives I'll let you chew on that for a while. :)</div>

Here we have two 4" can's that are on their own dimmer switch. I did this with the intent that should someone stay over they have kind of a nice little bit of light while they lay in bed rather than having the whole room lit up. You'll notice in the pic below as well that there is access on the back side of this wall. I did this intentionally for flexibility down the road. Again everything was done with future changes in mind and this was one of them. Rafters were left open and accessible from the other side as well in case we wanted to add speakers or more lighting to the ceiling or even a projector. </div>

This is the night Matt and dad dill helped throw up the plaster board. We went with plaster because the rest of the house had it so I just wanted to maintain continuity. Good thing I did because I smacked that ceiling a million times with 2 x 4s that would have destroyed drywall and put a nice red tint on my face. </div>

So here you see visqueen all over the floor. Temporary hockey rink????? No. Dad Dill wisely recommended we do this before the plasters came the next day. That entailed moving that lovely ship lap all the way up against the wall and taping this stuff down. I politely and respectfully challenged my father in law asking if that was really necessary and in his patience of Job temperament he said I could do whatever I want which is father in law code language for just do it because she's my daughter and that's all that needs said. So..... we have plastic. :) Good call because they schmucked (is that even a word.....I think it's german) the plaster on and absolutely covered my floor in it. Yet with Dad's kind advice it cleaned up real nice Clark. (*cue the Eddy scene from christmas vacation)</div>

Ok at this point I can pretty much exit stage left becuase this was all my wife. Not only did she paint the ceiling late at night but she did this......primed every board front and back of this ship lap for almost 2 or 3 weeks straight. My only contribution is those highly stable, well built drying racks. If you look closely you can see her through the crack on the left. It took me forever to find pictures where she wasn't in them. She is very vain with her picture taking and I have to remind her about the biblical virtue of humility. </div>

Although with all of the twists and turns this reno took on, maybe publishing it wouldn't be so bad.....and here we are publishing it on the internet for all to see. FYI to the 2 people that will read this, I'm not a writer. My animated mind just can't make it to my fingertips to pen the odd thoughts of humor that run through my mind on a daily basis. <br />
<br />
Let me just start by saying this. I. DON'T. KNOW. CONSTRUCTION. I'm in sales, I mean c'mon I talk...... for a living. I don't put nail to board, drywall to stud, wire to light....no I talk for a living. I mean basically my "talent" or "gift" or whatever you call it is rooted in the the verse that God says I must tame. All that to say, my fellow construction brethren....mad respect bros or sis' in the modern case. The talent each of you have in taking a blank canvas and making something custom out of it for a client is awe inspiring. Not only can you make the creation come to life but all the while you listen to the homeowner with a smile on your face while inside you are thinking this person is COMPLETELY NUTS.<br />
<br />
Enter my construction crew lineup.<br />
<br />
Jeff Rose - Uncle of the Bride, best trimmer west of the Atlantic. No Joke uncle Jeff made this vision / 8.5 x 11 sketch of mine a reality. I recommend to him anyone because his results are only one thing...Perfect. Word of caution, don't let the below picture fool you. :) <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Dave Dill a.k.a. Dad, papa (to the boys), the guy that essentially signed on the dotted line to let me marry the most beautifully created creature that walks on two legs (outside of Jesus) my wife. :) In all seriousness Dad Dill's skills are second to none. He's a farmer/master carpenter....the guy that basically built his own house so well that if a tornado hit it, it would classify the Dill house as an F5 for damage done to the tornado. He builds things right, and reinforced. Everything he is in engineering and construction...I'm the opposite. *Sidenote - I made sure Kim knew of my lack of talents in these fields and the crazy girl still said yes at the altar. <br />

<br />
<br />
Matt Slagel - Oh where do I even start. Matt is, simply put, my right arm, brain, leg, eye, ear, nostril....I think you get the point. He's one of those blessings God gives you in life that you're privileged enough to call your best friend and my boys have adopted as their favorite "uncle".....which even Matt would tell you he has earned. Thursday night dinners wouldn't be the same without him, and there is no project I've done that he hasn't had his hand or input in. This project was especially fun as we worked late into the night sometimes while having our beloved cubbies games on in the background, and we all know how that ended. :)<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTAIXLZvvZHMHUTeyRzYZh7XbZUlcF85I6LUzWyqcTaxtPmyU6trp9-MZn3qCN1prJfNNk3Y7TNSPK10uleYOQ732FyC-9KJYPEC4dKZYW0YtjhfRd_guGhXNAbq4aVUkfJj2kWfD9nTEp/s1600/IMG_1649.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTAIXLZvvZHMHUTeyRzYZh7XbZUlcF85I6LUzWyqcTaxtPmyU6trp9-MZn3qCN1prJfNNk3Y7TNSPK10uleYOQ732FyC-9KJYPEC4dKZYW0YtjhfRd_guGhXNAbq4aVUkfJj2kWfD9nTEp/s640/IMG_1649.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Brent Dill - My very chatty brother in law. This man speaks like no other so before you go striking up a conversation with him think twice, maybe three times. In all seriousness Brent blew me away with his talent. My father in law is a perfectionist and has a God given gift of natural engineering. His mind works in ways that blow people away project after project, and when Brent finished my pet project I gave him I could instantly tell that his talent and eye are the same as Dad's. I approached my BIL about doing a custom desk for us after I couldn't find one in a store I liked that I could afford. He had recently begun deconstruction of the old family farmstead's corn crib and we both agreed to try using some of the old 2x12s from there to make the desk. Wait till you see how it turned out. <br />

<br />
Will Zeller - a.k.a. Dad. You need paint, varnish, glossy, or matte, he can paint it for you. He's old school so the materials and workmanship he employs just aren't as common as they used to. I asked dad to paint out finish out wood pieces for our project. You know the crown, baseboard, closets and a couple pieces of wood to cover up the gaps. Just a couple pieces of wood I told him. Sooooo remember when I was mentioning my lack of experience in the construction field......yeah pretty sure I barely lived to see the basement finished after all of the wood was dropped off at my dads shop. Credit to the man, he didn't have a heart attack what with it being 10x more wood than I told him, the middle of July and 100+ degree weather. No no no my dad loves me through and through and got the job done......at the expense of me being removed from the will of course.<br />
<br />
I gave him two pictures, yes I'm biased but the first shows his true servant heart. If there is one thing that he's taught me it's to serve without grumbling or complaint and always give your best. The second picture is his hidden personality of which when he is wearing the pink skull candy beanie he means business. On this day it may look like he's helping us move in and set up our bed with that metal support but really....he's just playing air guitar. :)<br />

<br />
Any who, now that you know theses all stars let's get this party started.<br />
<br />
Since my intro was so long and many of you have seen some of these pictures I'll make this a brief review. Basically we live in a 1900 square foot ranch with a cool vaulted ceiling for our great room. The downer though is that our basement wasn't a full basement. Still drives my father in law nuts to this day why they can't dig out the extra 7X32' section and call it a day.....buuuuut such is life. Our basement is a typical ranch style basement. Long and narrow and broken into four sections. There is the great room that you see here (section 1) as well as the theatre room which is through those french doors (section 4) Sorry no pictures of that space.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxQz-UWGCBWx6NjyNFvM979U9EXyT_CcKVyhtcFtqOGG2Wfv0B37GcAsSg1ypAixK96QQBd5YEPciI1KpVV9HzbY6u1y32Z5Ng4-Q-vbsVpCoMHy39irMgWaIJIQ-n4tz21VhTd_PcbxSY/s1600/IMG_2312.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxQz-UWGCBWx6NjyNFvM979U9EXyT_CcKVyhtcFtqOGG2Wfv0B37GcAsSg1ypAixK96QQBd5YEPciI1KpVV9HzbY6u1y32Z5Ng4-Q-vbsVpCoMHy39irMgWaIJIQ-n4tz21VhTd_PcbxSY/s640/IMG_2312.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2rQormnl3C5RSd0f5Xh7N5A1m0QV1oVzkLLs1XbLWHOxfvRNX1B6KZR1I-172kP4NhZhHC0FQgdrErJNM6F9aTzwt26z5xs9T42QvFy4rPqsaZk7nKmPF6Y72CspMYH_96Dnx2dV7Rqc8/s1600/IMG_2314.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2rQormnl3C5RSd0f5Xh7N5A1m0QV1oVzkLLs1XbLWHOxfvRNX1B6KZR1I-172kP4NhZhHC0FQgdrErJNM6F9aTzwt26z5xs9T42QvFy4rPqsaZk7nKmPF6Y72CspMYH_96Dnx2dV7Rqc8/s640/IMG_2314.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then there is the storage room (section 2) which is behind the angled wall to the left of the french doors in the pic above. The plan here was to remove the angled wall, square it off, remove the drop ceiling, center table, and storage rack with all of the the random construction pieces from previous owners projects to give it more height. This was a fun "organization" project because it gave Kim more space to store her home dec stuff. It was only after I was done that I thought....why in the heck did I just give her more space for that. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizFLRLXS7SJRjUNzB-weVftIq-3nakqM_vVYqPBb7d91njOc7fWwQdkJd7dvdtecx-gLovCX32zF7CbKZk04GPapgfuK514E6Ds2ku62yEZ4nfLPyYs9Q81GHGLM0-jlq3oQYzaHX4ORl5/s1600/IMG_2317.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizFLRLXS7SJRjUNzB-weVftIq-3nakqM_vVYqPBb7d91njOc7fWwQdkJd7dvdtecx-gLovCX32zF7CbKZk04GPapgfuK514E6Ds2ku62yEZ4nfLPyYs9Q81GHGLM0-jlq3oQYzaHX4ORl5/s640/IMG_2317.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Lastly, there is the laundry/under stair storage/utility room. Mom Dill, or as I've always called her "Momma" thought it would be a good idea to move half the wall back about 3 feet to give us more depth to the room and more space since we would be loosing some from the custom built-ins. So down the wall came.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9N4qYPFONl8une7z7z5etA95HBLLOxR9wWtKxRciIKd2gPE-LqUsZxQwXKOOhkCAd58KNM_hXZWb68Dl7MvtLCUtF3Vf_9kQjqW4rBGsmJaqwEyijrLHUeK5Q-hRvcHGuIZy1tPr3oQm3/s1600/IMG_3714.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9N4qYPFONl8une7z7z5etA95HBLLOxR9wWtKxRciIKd2gPE-LqUsZxQwXKOOhkCAd58KNM_hXZWb68Dl7MvtLCUtF3Vf_9kQjqW4rBGsmJaqwEyijrLHUeK5Q-hRvcHGuIZy1tPr3oQm3/s640/IMG_3714.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My wife is currently freaking out that this picture will be all over the internet and now every one will know that she is *gasp* slightly disorganized..... (Those of you that know her will get this. Those of you that don't.....continue on)<br />
<br />
Now that the prep work has been done time to stud it in....<br />

As we welcome spring here in the midwest (and a gorgeous one it has been) I found it necessary to make a trip to the windy city as my wife and I hadn't been there in quite a while. So memorial day weekend we headed up and met a couple friends of ours to enjoy shopping, food, and of course fellowship. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loaded up here with a variety of colors and prints from a numerous amount of different stores as I've tried to shy away from being to one store focused. There really is a lot out there if you're willing to open up your eyes and check it out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Again I went with a nice range of colors, prints, materials, and puporsed shirts. I had found that in my wardrobe I had become too much of a solids guy and it was time to branch out....esp with this season being all about stripes and color blocking. Details later. Enjoy.</div>

I waited to find a silk knit black tie, and last year about August-October time frame Lands End Canvas came out with this. I had wanted a 2 3/4" width silk knit but couldn't find one out there I liked. Saw them post this and fell all over it. I think you should have at least 2 maybe 3 differing widths of black silk knit ties...just to manage for the occasion of course. Just looked at their website and either they sold out or don't offer it anymore.<br />
<br />
P.S. Sorry if some are blurry, black was hard to shoot for some reason.<br />

Crew of course but when I went to order it they only had it in the white/off white color. Tried a store search with a PS and couldn't find anything there. Last ditch effort was to check the Saint James site, SCORE they had 4 left so I snagged one. Ordered it on Friday and got it on a Monday w/o paying for overnight shipping from NY to IL. Now thats fast, and their customer service was excellent.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

First three stock photo from TNF, last one is mine from fall 09 collection which is I liked because it's different than the standard black white and gray. It's called the plasma thermal jacket, and is way warm with prima loft rather than down. It's waterproof, windproof, and warm; definitely worth overspending on for winters in the midwest. Crew ShirtsFinally J. Crew is catching up with dress shirts. Just a couple of months ago I purchased 4 dress shirts from them and had to get a large because their Mediums run 15-15.5 neck and 33 arm length. I, as mentioned before am a 16 35". Now I'm swimming in my dress shirts because they are way too huge in the waist. <br />
<br />
I was ready to pass up and stick with the tried and true of Brooks, Banana, and Charles Tyrwhitt, but my faith has been restored (for now). With their new spring rollouts looks like they finally have seen the light and now have allowed us to size up ourselves with the right shirt. I haven't tried it out yet but looking to get my hands on one to see how it fits. Will let you know how it goes when it rolls in. <br />

J. Crew really shocked me with this next one though, I haven't seen them have one of these in any years past and am real stoked about getting my hands on this one. It's their version of the button collar popover. Doing it like RRL and GANT. I definitely WILL be getting my hands on this.<br />

Crew's latest catalogs I found this shirt that I liked along with the chambray hill side tie, problem is I didn't feel like dropping over $100 on it. Well it just so happened on our trip to the NYC that I went into a gap and found this little gem for 30% off, original price $49.50. My wife is right, it does pay to look around, of course I never do so maybe just maybe I can start prying J. Crews death grip off of me haha, j/k but in all seriousness pretty happy that I found this.<br />
<br />
<br />
(I couldn't find the pics of the J. Crew one but some of you may remember that this one is eerily similar) <br />

<br />
You can never have too much gingham, just ask Brooks...<br />
<br />
The fit on these is impeccable, fits my shoulders and waist perfect and the collar is just the icing on the cake. I don't understand why we don't see more of this collar from J. Crew, Gap, and especially Banana. If you're looking for the perfect fit this extra slim fit was awesome for me. I'm 6'0" 180. Measurements were 16" Neck 35" Arm not a bit more and not a bit less. I personally wash and hang dry them and then iron them. Avoids shrinkage and the dry cleaner (yes it is a lost art) beating the crap outa them. Got em in these colors while BB was running a 2 for 100 special otherwise $79.50 a piece.<br />

It's actually a neon pink stripe with dark red. Nice pop of color with a navy, or charcoal suit.<br />

The shirt, flannel, jeans, and belt are all from J. Crew. The shoes are a Christmas gift from last year but still holding up perfectly, Clarks desert boots in beeswax leather. The watch is a great find, for those wanting the look of the rolex but don't want to drop the money this is perfect. It's an Invicta Pro Diver coin edge bezel. Under $100 bones easy. I've had it for about 2 years and no problems, wear it just about every day, of course when I'm not wearing my J. Crew Timex. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736037143258401443.post-37201060774311188262011-01-21T12:12:00.000-08:002011-01-21T12:16:22.742-08:00Preview<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhepn1FDdYgKMC2csEX6oldi38byg3Ys7Czo-Ph-ehJ5f8OGve_IG_DJyNQQtu6b3GsD6yaQLOdzSDa8GlKtrkrXGJbqtLNyogrkRS62qJ_Z_ZlxoNSPnqrsNJTc6GwpNB9PrzmkoAeyN2-/s1600/DSC_0029.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhepn1FDdYgKMC2csEX6oldi38byg3Ys7Czo-Ph-ehJ5f8OGve_IG_DJyNQQtu6b3GsD6yaQLOdzSDa8GlKtrkrXGJbqtLNyogrkRS62qJ_Z_ZlxoNSPnqrsNJTc6GwpNB9PrzmkoAeyN2-/s640/DSC_0029.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736037143258401443.post-51519294786810059482010-12-29T14:46:00.000-08:002010-12-29T14:46:59.822-08:00Updates Coming SOON....Well as it appears as it's going on almost two months since I've posted on here I thought I better to let everyone know I'm still alive.
